The Flaming Iron

For this topic, I imagined a land in which it is forbidden to bend or forge metal, due to the evil Warlord's fear of an uprising of the common folk.

However, unbeknownst to the Warlord, a lone young peasant, late in the dark of night, hidden in a secret forge deep in the forest or somewhere, has begun creating weapons to overthrow him.

Yadda, yadda . . . there's probably something about a prophecy and the alignment of stars and planets, or the color of the sea in there too. . .

I hope everything's going well guys.  I wanted to spend a little more time on this one and make it special.

  1. It definitely hints at a deeper story behind it. I especially like the polish applied to the kid; some nice lighting and pose work. That detailed chain mail definitely makes my laziness flare up though. The painting looks great to put it simply. A small suggestion to maybe expand the visual storytelling; I can see showing the villain made of and surrounded by his hoard of metal, like Smaug and his gold; while the boy area is as devoid of metal as can be (except for the forged weapons) with only little buttons and trinkets from which he's had to collect tiny bits of overlooked metal. Its super great, that's just something that ran through my head, thought I would share.

Keep up the awesome work, hope everything is going well for you, too.

    1. The chain mail was made really easy with a pretty simple brush. There was no way I was going to paint every little link like that! Hope that soothes your flare up.

I like your ideas for expanding the visual narrative by hinting that the boy has been scrapping together little old and long forgotten metal trinkets and scraps. This image kind of evolved along the way and I didn't have the clearest idea when I started it where I would be going with it. So there's room for all sorts of things.

If we ever get 'flaming iron' (or something similar) as a topic again, maybe I'll have to do another in this series of him collecting bits of metal junk to forge. :)
